thanks for the awesome tutorial, mate! hello from down under!
Thats so cool 😍
Thank you!
I'm having trouble getting those higher voltage colors. The anodized layer looks like it's flaking off. What solution/electrolyte are you using? Just a satured solution of baking soda?
How did you get it back to bare titanium? What’s the best method to strip it back to raw? Or did you just use a new clip?
Can't wait to do my Junkyard dog, thanx a lot for the simple and easy to understand vid.
I think this video is awesome. I don't understand anodizing but the RUclips videos fall into color dye / none or titanium / aluminum. Do you not like aluminum or color dye? I hope you produce more content; it's very good. Thank you.😊
What type of wire are you using in this video? Im wanting to anodize my knife handles and i almost have everything i need, except the wire😂
Does the gauge of pure titanium wire matter when anodizing?
Way cool, gonna do something like that as soon as I get my birthday present. Knife with titanium scales
Amazing stuff but a series of 9V batteries makes me nervous. If you do get more serious and decide to start a business of this, you might want to look at a plug in AC/DC variable power supply. Amazon seems to have a wide selection of them at affordable prices
How did you get it back to bare titanium? And how often do the batteries need to be changed out, do you periodically check their strength? Thanks! And that gold was amazing. I think the color of your gloves may be influencing the colors we see through your video capture.
You have given me some ideas that I hadn't thought of before. Thank you.
What method do you use to get back to raw Ti?
What method do you use to get back to raw Ti?
Is it the same process for aluminium?
Hello there, great video. How do you achieve the colour underneath? Say like I wanted red with black splash or vice versa. Would I anodize the part black first add nail polish then anodize it red? Also, what do you use to remove the nail polish? Maybe I missed that anyway. I will check out your other videos. Thanks
What kind of liquid,,, is that for battery?
This is so cool ❤
That almost yellow.. i think it's called green 😆
More precisely, Lime green
Bro is colorblind
Can stainless steel bolt anodizing ? Or another method ?
Hello, just wondering how long the batteries will last. I really just want to do a couple titanium knife scales and the power supplies are really expensive.
I can't believe this wasn't an experiment in elementary science class. Thanks for sharing the process.
After watching this and the video about what colors you can get by adding more batteries, I think I'm going to try a few pieces. If it take 10 seconds to get the color you want, would there be any advantage to leaving it longer, like a few minutes, or an hour? I'm just wondering if the anodizing can penetrate the surface deeper and be longer lasting.
I’m going to anodizing some parts on my bmx bike soon! ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
Your videos are amazing glad i found you bro and thanks for fyll tutorials im slow lol
Best video on RUclips it's awesome 👌 ❤!! Do I need a fork in the water while doing this? What's it for? Can you link us to the rust remover and cables ?
You eat fruit loops with this spoon?
Soluble compounds..please
Does this work on aluminium aswell?
Awesome video! But, why did you whink it again before going to 93V?
In that case, you could also use curlex wrap and it’s a little cheaper.
I try with a screw..DONT WORK
If you're a bit more specific about what you attempted to do with the screw I may be able to help fix your issue. Are you trying to anodize the screw?
@@ApollosRings yes..a titanium screw
If you follow the steps exactly in the video that I've left a link for below and it still doesn't work, you most likely either have a bad battery, or the piece you're trying to anodize isn't titanium. Check out the video and If you're still having trouble after that, let me know. ruclips.net/video/8R3ebqKDPkU/видео.html
@@ApollosRings i do exactly what You said.
What’s metal is the small thin wire your using ti dangle the clip, stainless or titanium?
Titanium
@@ApollosRings if I don’t have titanium wire could I use something else, or just clip it straight to the Ti piece being anodized?
You can probably get away with using a piece of stainless wire. Copper or carbon steel definitely won't work correctly. You could clip the alligator clip directly to the piece, but you'll have to move it to a different place to do the entire anodizing job because if you submerge the alligator clip it will eat away at the clips and most likely will make a weird looking spot where they are attached. If you do half, then flip it over and do the other half after moving the clip, that's your best shot at an even ano job. Hope that helps!
If the stainless steel wire bubbles in the solution it isn't compatible. It may still anodize, but you'll have a hard time getting consistent color.
@@ApollosRings yes this helped a lot, thank you! Where did you get the Titsnium wire, like Amazon?
If you do that, what do you need? Please write the details.
Watch this video. I explain exactly what you need, and how to do it. There are links in the video description if you need to purchase any materials. ruclips.net/video/8R3ebqKDPkU/видео.htmlsi=a33NW1rVzx7LjTX0
What do you use as electrolyte in this video? I used 9% vinegar and I couldn't get green color at 100 volts. Neither at any volts.
It's just baking soda dissolved in distilled water. Green can be a tricky color to achieve. I've found that grade 5 titanium works best, and etching the piece first definitely seems to help. If I don't get a good etch I'll usually end up with more of a teal color.
@@ApollosRings Thank you so much for your quick answer! I'm working with grade 2 titanium. I've watched your other videos now, they're awesome. I was using a piece of 18ga titanium wire as a cathode before I found your channel. I'm going to look up for a stainless fork tomorrow :)
No problem, happy to help! I occasionally use a piece of balled up titanium wire as a cathode as well. As long as it's either stainless steel or titanium you should be good. You just want to have the cathode roughly the same size, or larger than the piece you're anodizing.
what other metals can be anodized like this?
What’s the highest voltage you are able to achieve with the 9 volt batteries? Do you think you could achieve a green color with this setup?
I've gone up to around 110v with the batteries and have done green with them around 100V. It can be a somewhat elusive color, but it's 100% possible with 9V's. It's just harder to dial in a color with them. Sometimes it'll come out more of a teal. One guy recommended using a potentiometer to fine tune the colors with batteries. Once I started anodizing for my ring making I bought a bench-top power supply to do the fine tuning, but I don't see why a potentiometer wouldn't work.
@@ApollosRingsAwesome! Thanks a ton for the info!
@blknives Anytime, happy to help! 👊🏼
Are you using titan wire? To bad this is very expensiv
The wire I use is titanium. It's relatively cheap for a small roll on Amazon. I have links in the description of every video for everything I use.
Can i use cooper wire?
I have a video up of what happens when you use copper wire. It won't anodize correctly and you won't get accurate colors. Check out the vid if you want to see exactly what I mean.
Does it give off toxic fumes like aluminum?
The actual process of anodizing doesn't, but if you're using a chemical to strip the ano from a piece, you'll want to do that in a well ventilated area.
@@ApollosRings If I don't want to use chemicals can I just use something abrasive?
Yes, you can mechanically remove anodizing with an abrasive. Scotch-Brite pads work well.
Does it make a difference if it’s done on a bigger piece? Like the handle scale vs pocket clip?
No, but you'll want to try to make the cathode (the stainless steel fork in the video, or a piece of scrap titanium) roughly the same size as the piece you are anodizing.
That looks so good, nice video. So bad that titanium and titanium machining is pretty expansive.
Thanks!
1) Does prolonged time in the anodizing bath change anything? 2) Why the titanium wire, and just not just wire?
No, keeping the piece in longer has no effect, it's only the voltage that will change the color. Titanium wire is used because if you use a different material it screws with the anodizing. I have a video up on the channel showing what happens using copper wire, if you're interested in checking it out.
Dude !!! That’s nuthin but bad !! Thank you for your time and effort!! My son gave me a Brous Blade with standard titanium scales,, now I can make em nice !!! Thanks again!!!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this. I know it's old....but here's a thought. I'm about to mod an espresso machine, by adding a single pole dimmer switch. It's basically just a turny-knob with one wire going in, and one going out. So, I was thinking if you added one of those into your circuit, you could actually hit anywhere in the 9V range of each battery. What we just watched were the colors *at* 9V, 18V, 27V etc. But if this button was demarked into 9 units, you would be able to get a (stepless) 1V increment adjustment on each battery addition. So you could, easily, produce a near seamless spectrum.
Once I started anodizing more for the business I finally just bought a bench top power supply, which does exactly what you explained with the dimmer switch. Thanks for taking the time to check out the video! 👊🏼
@@ApollosRings of course that's the best option. But as "just" a knife collector and enthusiast, I can't really justify the expense. I don't have much Ti. But while watching this, it dawned on me that a 1-pole dimmer would totally work (I think).
@sstockemer yeah, I agree, I don't see why it shouldn't work. Certainly worth a shot
Is it necessary to strip the old anodising r can you just do it over the old?
It depends. If you want to do a color that requires a higher voltage it'll work just fine, but if the current color is a higher voltage than the color you want then you'll have to strip it first. Does that make sense?
@@ApollosRings thanks that makes sense. I'll try it
Did you etch it first?
Yeah, it's etched with Whink Rust & Stain Remover
can you do it on chrome ?
No, unfortunately it won't work on chrome. It needs to be titanium, niobium, or the like for this specific process to work.
